Biography
I am an architect and painter with over 45 years of experience. I am an emeritus professor in the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland - College Park where I served as Dean.
I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and have lived on all three coasts of the United States as well in its great midwest. These experiences have helped me appreciate the rich tapestry of landscapes that constitute this country.

Needless to say I am a visual thinker. That means I tend to think with a pencil or pen in hand and draw my thoughts. Consequently, I tend to dwell on space, color, form and texture when I observe a scene.

Drawing is foundational for me. Since an early age I have made drawings. It was this interest that led me to pursue a career as an architect. My training at Pennsylvania State University involved compulsory drawing, painting and graphic design courses that further honed skills and advanced my representational abilities. It was my ability to make drawings from life that gave my early career as an architect a jump start.

Later, as a teacher at Temple University, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach foundational design with the painter Richard Raiselis. He helped me continue my development of thinking creatively through mark making.
Today I spend several hours each day painting. I find inspiration in both urban and rural contexts and paint from life whenever time and weather permit.
